Where you’ll be
The Stanhope is the remotest of all our huts.
Inclusive of a beautiful roll top bath, outdoor seating. The kitchen facilities include a gas hob, air fryer, kettle, toaster, fridge (with small freezer compartment), cookware. A DVD player is provided with a large choice of films to choose from to enjoy in front of the cosy fire on the cooler nights. I'm afraid this is not a TV as we do not get internet/ coverage at the hut. We provide loo rolls, towels, bath robes, soap, shampoo, body wash and body lotion and a hairdryer. Heating is via the wood-burner and a fan is provided for the warmer months.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE BOOKING
Stanhope is situated in an extremely remote and rural location. As a result, the surroundings are very natural and can be quite wild, particularly during the summer months when the ferns and grasses can become long and dense.
DARKNESS & NIGHT-TIME ACCESS
It is very dark here at night, and there are no lit walkways through the fields. This is intentional, as we are committed to minimising our impact on the surrounding landscape and preserving the beautiful, uninterrupted night sky. We ask all guests to take extra care when walking to and from the hut, particularly after dark and during the winter months when the ground can become muddy and uneven. We also always recommend arriving in daylight, if you are arriving after dark please be prepared for an adventure.
WELLIES ARE A MUST during the wetter months.
ACCESS & MOBILITY
Please be aware that The Fern is located approximately 500 metres from the car parking area, along a natural field path. The terrain can be uneven, muddy and challenging, particularly in wet weather. Due to the remote and natural setting, we do not recommend The Fern for guests with limited mobility or anyone who may find a 500-metre walk across uneven ground difficult. If you are heavily pregnant, please take the distance, terrain and remote location into consideration before booking. We have had guests highlight the importance of this to us in the past. A car is strongly recommended for your stay. Taxis can be difficult to arrange due to our remote location. If you are planning to arrive by train or without a car, please contact us before booking so that we can discuss the location and access with you.
By booking a stay at The Fern, you acknowledge and accept that this is a remote wilderness setting, with natural terrain, limited lighting and rural conditions. These are an integral part of the experience and are not something we are able to alter.

Getting around
We're Really Out in the Middle of Nowhere And that's exactly how we like it. Hide In The Downs is tucked away in the countryside, surrounded by fields, big skies and very little else. There are no shops or busy roads just around the corner. Because of our wonderfully remote location, we highly recommend arriving by car. Having your own vehicle makes getting here much easier and gives you the freedom to explore the surrounding countryside and local villages during your stay. Arriving by train is possible but please be aware that the journey is not particularly straightforward. Faversham and Sittingbourne are the most practical stations if you're planning to take a taxi for the final part of your journey. If you're planning to walk or cycle to Hide In The Downs, Lenham is the best station to use and provides the more suitable starting point for making the journey by bike or on foot.
Neighborhood
If you wish to explore the area, we are spoilt for things to do locally. Not only do we have beautiful walking trails and a pub that can be reached on foot in 30 minutes through a beautiful valley. We have many places to visit near to us, please refer to our local recommendations section.
